New Zealand A strong earthquake struck one of the largest cities in New Zealand on Tuesday at the height of a busy working day, the tilting of large buildings and churches, crushing and buses, killing at least 65 people in one of the worst natural disasters in the country.
It was the second major earthquake to hit Christchurch, a city of 350,000 in five months, if Tuesday’s earthquake of 6.3 magnitude caused destruction more than a powerful earthquake that struck in September before dawn on a weekend. “It’s just a scene of desolation,” Prime Minister John Key said after rushing to the city a few hours after the earthquake. He said the death toll was 65, and may increase. “We are witnessing perhaps be the darkest day in New Zealand. ”
The spire of the cathedral city of well-known stone toppled in a central square, while the multi-storey buildings collapsed on themselves and the streets were littered with bricks and broken concrete.
Sidewalks and roads were cracked and while thousands of stunned, crying and screaming residents wandered the streets as sirens and car alarms screaming. Ambulance services were quickly overwhelmed, and groups of people have helped victims of clutching bleeding wounds, and others were conducted in private vehicles in makeshift stretchers made from carpet or pieces of debris.
The New Zealand Herald reported that the quake's epicenter was Lyttelton with a depth of 5 kilometers, though it was felt as far away as Wellington and Dunedin per Twitter reports. It shook the Canterbury region, which has a population of approximately 500,000. Radio New Zealand reports "that some people have been killed."
Radio New Zealand also noted some of the damage from the quake in Christchurch: a church collapsed, a bridge is impassible, the airport has been shut down and the mayor is urging people not to drive due to road damage.
